Xi Liu’s artistic practice delves into the intricate dynamics of human relationships, exploring the physical, emotional, and psychological forces that shape our interactions. Her work is a reflection on the tension between the individual and the collective, examining how personal experiences are influenced by broader social contexts. Through her paintings, Liu captures the fleeting nature of moments, using distorted, tilted forms to convey a sense of compression and oscillation, which mirrors the inner and outer conflicts people face in their daily lives.
Her work often evokes a sense of movement, where energy, fragility, and transformation coexist. Liu’s recurring use of imagery such as fireworks symbolizes bursts of intensity, fleeting and dissolving just as quickly. This powerful visual language engages with the idea of time, exploring how moments can be condensed and frozen, layered with multiple frames to reflect the complexity of experience.
Xi Liu, b. 1998 in China, earned in 2024 a MFA at the UCL Slade School of Art in London. Recent exhibitions include Art021 Hong Kong with Seafood Room Gallery (2024); Hey Hood Gallery, London (2024); Royal Blue Gallery (2024); Soho Revue (upcoming).
